Britain and the Future of European Security

Chatham House | 10/12/2018

Invitation Only Research Event

13 December 2018 - 12:00pm to 1:15pm

Chatham House | 10 St James's Square | London | SW1Y 4LE

Event participants

Philip Barton, Director General, Consular and Security, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Chair: Hans Kundnani, Senior Research Fellow, Europe Programme, Chatham House

From Russia’s annexation of Crimea and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, to cyberattacks and the use of a chemical nerve agent in Salisbury, Europe faces a range of security challenges.  At the same time, the current US administration has called in to question assumptions about America’s approach to European security, calling for greater burden-sharing from European partners and accelerating a growing debate about European 'strategic autonomy'.  All this comes against the backdrop of the continuing terrorist threat, migration pressures and the UK’s departure from the European Union.

The session will address the following questions:

  • What is the nature of the present threat to European security and how will this evolve over the next decade?
  • What should Europe’s response be and what part can the UK play?
  • Can and should the UK continue to act as a 'bridge' on transatlantic security issues?

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL.
