From Russia’s annexation of Crimea and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, to cyberattacks and the use of a chemical nerve agent in Salisbury, Europe faces a range of security challenges. At the same time, the current US administration has called in to question assumptions about America’s approach to European security, calling for greater burden-sharing from European partners and accelerating a growing debate about European 'strategic autonomy'. All this comes against the backdrop of the continuing terrorist threat, migration pressures and the UK’s departure from the European Union.
