British Diplomacy Post-Brexit

Chatham House | 12/02/2019

Invitation Only Research Event

20 February 2019 - 8:30am to 9:45am

Chatham House | 10 St James's Square | London | SW1Y 4LE

Event participants

Richard Moore, Director General for Political Affairs, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Chair: Dr Patricia Lewis, Research Director, International Security, Chatham House

The UK’s departure from the EU arguable represents a challenge to its diplomacy and global influence. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office will need creative ways to promote and defend the UK’s global interests at a time when the role of many international institutions is being questioned and digital communications and new technology are disrupting traditional patterns of diplomacy.

At this event, participants will consider the following questions:

  • Does conventional diplomacy still matter? Where and on what issues can British diplomacy make a difference?
  • What have been genuine success stories in recent UK foreign policy? What lessons could be learned from these?
  • How will leaving the EU affect Britain’s global influence? How should a re-calibrated approach to Europe fit within a wider diplomatic strategy?
  • What can the UK learn from the approaches of other mid-sized countries like Japan, France, Canada and Australia?

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
